Habit Hopping

I often write about addiction as, coming from a long ancestral line of vibrant characters addicted to everything from rum to racehorses, I know a thing or two about it!

I also know that it's one thing to kick 'the thing' but then there's the 'post thing habit hopping' to deal with.

For instance, you may give up smoking and take up shopping, or give up drinking and take up over-eating.

You see the thing is, it's not 'the thing' that is the problem - that's just a symptom.  You could indeed have a habit for anything - drugs, sex, dysfunctional relationships, gambling, alcohol, food, shopping, violence, working, cleaning, gaming, sabotaging your own success....and so on.....

The root of the problem is actually an addiction to pain (physical or emotional or both) and roller coaster behaviour.  The pain comes from a lack of love and value and is often learned in childhood.   This deep pain can attach itself to anything, be that shopping or shoplifting!

Habit hopping is a common, often unconscious, choice for recovering addicts because the alternative to 'the thing' initially seems comforting and helpful.  But that particular road to salvation is a cul-de-sac when the comforts begins to wane.

You see the 'real thing' is often unidentified.  The activity - the smoking, shoplifting, gambling and so on, is a symptom not a cause.

So what is the 'real thing'?  It's an inability to see ourselves as beautiful, valuable, unique, 3 dimentional successful beings who have so much to offer.  Why can't we see that?  Because from the day we were born, we have been shaped and brainwashed by the patterns and beliefs of others - be that parents, peers, media and more.

My youngest brother checked into a number of rehabs during his short life and 'habit hopping' was touched upon but never really probed. They didn't call it that, of course, but I remember him telling me they were asked in group therapy whether they had any older members in the family with addictive behaviour?

Well blow me down! We had family members going back generations with an abundance of unfavourable habits, take your pick!  It seemed odd back then but now I realise it wasn't odd at all, it was a pattern of rollercoaster behaviour that had been passed down through the generations like an inheritance.

Recently it occurred to me that whilst I've been working on curing addictions in this life time - for myself and my clients - it has also helped to heal the ancestral energy.  Almost like sending love and forgiveness back down line and who knows how long that line goes back, eons no doubt!

So is it really possible to heal yourself, your ancestral lineage and your ascendants in this lifetime?

I believe so, but it is a lifelong journey which takes courage, commitment and support and is vital to our own wellbeing and that of our children and future family members.

It begins by acknowledging there may be a problem with patterns and beliefs.  Followed by a willingness to make changes that will help the real you stand up and find a more satisfying, fulfilling way of living.

We are so much more than we believe ourselves to be.

With love and light,  Susan
