Stuck in Old Patterns of Thought

We've all done this at one time or another -  filled our minds with someone who isn't there most of the time, or perhaps isn't there at all - a crush, a loss, a fantasy, an ex partner, an unpleasant colleague and so on.  But if our minds keep replaying patterns of thought which are not serving us in a positive way then it is very difficult to be in the present moment and direct our energy in a way that encourages happiness and progression.  So what can we do about it?

The first thing is to acknowledge that it may indeed be a pattern or a programme that the mind keeps replaying.  Does it seem familiar?  Does it feel a little like a previous experience or relationship?  If so, then it's likely to be learned behaviour, possibly from a young age; perhaps something we reacted to at one time which helped us to cope, or maybe something we witnessed someone else doing, or a mode of behaviour that the family or society seems to expect of us.

These patterns get stuck in our minds, a bit like a hardrive,  and we automatically play them out time and time again in similar scenarios - if it worked the first time as a coping mechanism and survival technique then it will work again,  won't it?!   The answer may well be 'no' so we have to change our thoughts and reactions to certain people and situations and clean up the hardrive periodically.

There are some great tools & therapies to achieve this change in thought process and I use a number of them in my practice with clients.  For example, Neurobiomagnetism (fast track counselling), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, 'Tapping'), Reiki Healing and Guided Meditation, among other things.

Once we begin to realise how the mind can subconsciously dictate our reactions to certain things, it's remarkably easy to start thinking in a different way and to trust that we can find different ways of coping and surviving.  And, with practice,  we find much more positive ways to live our lives.
